Popularity of Harry Potter: Wizards Unite

Niantic’s Harry Potter: Wizards Unite released a few days ago, hitting 400K downloads and $300K in revenue in the first day of launch for US and UK markets. We decided to look at Google Trends to see how interested people are today compared to when the older Harry Potter games released. As it turns out, there was a video game for every single movie, two Lego Harry Potter games, and a recent mobile game called Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery.
In terms of monthly traffic, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite has already eclipsed the game with the most interest: Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4. We pegged the search index to the peak of this game (100), which means we are show how high Wizards Unite gets above that number. We still have not reached the end of June, so Wizards Unite is bound to have even more interest by the end.
The Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets games released before Google Trends started collecting data, so we don’t have interest from release day on those. Regardless, the following chart depicts peak monthly search index.
Order of the Phoenix was the most popular game among the movie-related titles upon release, but this was less than half of what Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 saw. The games that made the least splash were clearly the Deathly Hallows duo.
So one could say Wizards Unite is now officially the most popular Harry Potter game of all time! For a few days, Harry Potter: Wizards Unite even surpassed Pokemon GO in terms of daily search interest. It has not been able to maintain this level, however. We will see if the game can sustain the same levels of interest or not, but judging from Pokemon GO’s popularity, at the very least these kinds of mobile AR games can last quite a long time.
