And then there were two. After the chaos of the quarterfinal round, order re-emerged at the League of Legends Worlds this past weekend. Both Invictus Gaming and Fnatic won as expected and they both dismissed their over matched opponents in straight games. We live-blogged both games using our in-game prediction model and neither team’s chances of advancing were ever really in doubt.
It’s no surprise that the two remaining teams have broken away from the pack in our Elo ratings.
An Elo benefit to dominating at Worlds is that all the games are against quality opponents, which means even the best teams can continue to grow their rating. With IG and FNC clustered so closely at the top of the ranking, whoever wins this weekend will be the clear #1 when we launch our full club list next week.
Both clubs came out of Group D and they’ve played each other three times at Worlds. IG won the first game convincingly and appeared well on their win the advancing out of Group D as the #1 seed. However, disaster struck on the final day of group play and they lost to FNC in consecutive games. A look back shows that neither game was particularly close. This weekend’s match up may come down to which versions of each team shows up.
