What a tournament! Each group has gone through the round robin once and spots in the knock-out round will be given based on what happens over the next four days. In Group A, StatXP favorite Flash Wolves was upset by G2 Esports to give us a tie at the top. Our model still expects FW to advance as the #1 seed, but Afreeca Freecs are lurking after finally righting the ship against Phong Vu Buffalo. Competition for the second seed in Group B, the group of death, is wide open. StatXP expects Gen.G to advance along with RNG. Groups C and D are proceeding more to expectations, but one upset could still scramble to board in either group.
Our model has favored Flash Wolves since the tournament started due to a remarkable 2018 season. After FW’s loss to G2 Esports, our new #1 Elo team is Invictus Gaming. Looking at the full Elo ratings, it’s an encouraging sign for the knock out rounds that seven of the top eight teams in Elo rating are currently projected to advance (#10 G2 Esports is currently projected to advance over #7 Afreeca Freecs).
Unlike the first round robin, the second round-robin will feature one group per day. Tomorrow, Group B, the group of death, closes out their group play. Given their superior Elo rating, StatXP expects Gen.G to advance through along with RNG. However, a loss to Vitality or Cloud 9 (we see a Cloud9 upset as slightly more likely) could open the door for either team. And if Vitality, GG, or C9 can manage to upset RNG, then anything could happen!
