One day into Main Event competition and we’ve already had two upsets! G2 Esports shocked Afreeca Freecs and Vitality beat Gen.G in a thriller. Like the betting markets and the general public, StatXP did not see two South Korean sides losing to start the tournament. Having a model is most valuable in times like these because it allows us to account for these new developments while not overreacting.

StatXP now predicts G2 to advance over Afreeca Freecs despite AF maintaining a superior Elo rating. To get back into knock-out round contention, AF will need to knock-off StatXP favorite Flash Wolves. In Group C, the tournament’s Group of Death, StatXP still predicts Gen.G to advance over Vitality but it’s very close.

Groups A and B play again tomorrow, and we’ll see Group D for the first time. StatXP gives AF a 38% chance to pull off the needed upset against Flash Wolves. The model also sees two near-50/50 games, including betting darling Royal Never Give Up against reeling Gen.G. Could the South Korean side fall to 0-2 in the group of death to start the tournament?
